Sedgefield Ball Game 2016 - Extreme Sports
Sedgefield Ball Game is held each Shrove Tuesday. Its origin is said to date back over 900 years, although the first written account was recorded around 220 years ago.
Today, according to rumour, a secret local committee, organise the ball game to avoid any public liability.
Each year a senior local resident is selected to commence the game, by passing a ball three times through a bullring on the village green at 1 pm. The ball is made of leather, the game is to “ally” the ball at two goals, at either end of Sedgefield, but not before 4 pm. Today though the village has expanded, so only one goal now exists and that is a beck to the south of the village.
Between 1 pm and 4 pm the ball is kicked, passed and carried around the village and surrounding villages, local pubs by tradition. The Landlord rewarding the first person to enter each pub with a free drink.
Once the ball has been 'allied' at the beck it is then returned to the village green, where it must be passed through the bullring three more times, for someone to be declared the exhausted winner.
The adrenaline runs high throughout the match, with plenty of choice language and the odd scuffle breaking out.
Sedgefield is on my doorstep and this if the first time that I have ever been to the ball game, one thing is for certain. I will be returning very soon for a great day out with a difference, for the open minded.!
The strange thing is that, the Police just watch and the game simply governs itself, traffic simply halts as a scrum develops in front of a vehicle, but not for long as the game is fast and furious.

"I shot a few seconds less than an hour of footage in the 3.5 hours that the event lasted, this is my usual rough cut."
"Two days later and my thighs are killing me from all the running around that I did."
