Famed stage actress Norma Lawry retired upon marrying Stephen Lawry, considered one of the finest scientific minds, he working on a project the nature of which Norma does not know. He states its successful completion could change the face of the war. Norma tries to warn her seventeen year old stepdaughter Barbara Lawry, also an actress, from getting involved with Paul Gerente, her costar in a regional stage production. Norma knows first hand that Paul is a cad in once being engaged to him, such a warning which Barbara attributes to jealousy in believing that Norma is in love with him herself and that she only married her father for his money. When she may be implicated in a murder in discovering a dead body, Norma turns to her old friend, private investigator Duncan Maclain, to help her, he in turn being assisted by his two right hands, Marty and Friday, they his literal eyes in Mac being blind, Friday his guide dog, although Mac in general functions quite well on his own in most circumstances. If he gets too close to the what is happening and the plot that led to the murder, Mac may place his, Friday and Norma\'s lives among others in danger, that is unless the perpetrator(s) underestimate a blind man.

Συνεργάτες του είναι ο πιστός σκύλος και οδηγός του Friday, ο μπάτλερ του, Alistair (Mantan Moreland), και ο βοηθός του Marty (Allen Jenkins). Η παλιά ηθοποιός και φίλη του Maclain, Norma Lawry, (Ann Harding), ζητά τη βοήθειά του, αφού η ξεροκέφαλη 17χρονη πρόγονή της, Barbara (Donna Reed) -μια πολλά υποσχόμενη ηθοποιός- έχει ερωτευτεί τον τον πολύ μεγαλύτερό της και πρώην εραστή της Norma, Paul Gerente (John Emery). Αυτός έχει πείσει τη Barbara ότι Norma τον θέλει ακόμη και ότι έχει παντρευτεί τον πατέρα της Stephen (Reginald Denny) για τα χρήματά του. Ο Maclain, παροτρύνει τη Norma να λογικέψει τον Paul, αλλά αυτός επιμένει ότι αγαπά τη Barbara και την προσκαλεί το ίδιο βράδυ στο διαμέρισμά του. Τα πράγματα όμως θα εξελιχθούν απρόβλεπτα για όλους.

Πρόκειται για μια αστυνομική ταινία μυστηρίου, βασισμένη σ\' ένα βιβλίο του Baynard Kendrick που διασκεύασαν για τον κινηματογράφο ο Guy Trosper και ο Howard Emmett Rogers. Η ιστορία μοιάζει ίσως λίγο απλοϊκή σε κάποια μέρη της, διαθέτει όμως τρία σημαντικά στοιχεία που την καθιστούν ξεχωριστή και ελκυστική στο θεατή: τη σκηνοθεσία του μεγάλου πολωνο-αμερικανού σκηνοθέτη Fred Zinnemann, την εξαιρετική ερμηνεία του παλαίμαχου ηθοποιού Edward Arnold και τέλος ένα απίθανο σκύλο με το όνομα Friday που κλέβει την παράσταση! Όμως και ο πρωταγωνιστής Arnold είναι ιδιαίτερα διασκεδαστικός στο ρόλο του (ρόλος μέσα σε ρόλο!) που προσποιείται ότι είναι ένας εκκεντρικός, κακοδιατηρημένος θείος, με σκοπό να εξουδετερώσει το σχέδιο των κακών. Όλοι βρίσκονται κάτω από την ίδια στέγη και ο Arnold παίζει όπως η γάτα με το ποντίκι με τους κακοποιούς που υποδύονται η Katherine Emery και ο Stanley Ridges.
